According to an NBC affiliate of Alabama’s WTVM 13, two people died in the Amory, Miss. area. The tornado caused at least 21 fatalities.
In a recent interview, Laubhan explained why he prayed during the live broadcast.
“I can’t say that I was intending on praying. It was kind of a situation where we knew something extremely bad was happening, and we knew it was possible, or even probable that people were being hurt and about to die,” Laubhan told CNN.
“I’m very rarely at a loss for words, and I was just feeling a little overwhelmed, honestly. It just kind of came out.”
“The reaction from the public here in Mississippi in particular, has been overwhelmingly positive,” he continued. “In many cases, people have told me it helped them to realize the the seriousness of the situation.
“I would like to say it was something I intended on doing, but in this case, I think God just kind of took over at that moment.”
Many YouTube users expressed their gratitude for Laubhan’s actions.
One user said, “This prayer was the last thing that my dear friends, Dwight and his wife, heard before going to their underground shelter! Thank you, Father, for this faithful meteorologist! They said that it saved their lives!”
Another user said, “Bless him. Sad that this would be unusual. As a Katrina survivor, we truly appreciated everyone who prayed for us that night as our lives changed forever. Of all people, a meteorologist knows just what those numbers and images mean.”‘
An additional user explained, “I heard this prayer this morning on [a] news recap. Thanks to the meteorologist for praying for these people in their time of need. This brought me [to] tears. We need more of this type of coverage – facts and prayers.”
User Amy Newsom added, “Matt Laubhan has been the chief meteorologist for our area for many years. He truly cares and has helped save many lives over the years. Truly a remarkable guy! Thanks Matt.”
