"Total Loss": Explosion Destroys Catholic Church in Texas, 1 Person Hospitalized

An explosion allegedly caused by a gas leak destroyed Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn, Texas.

The explosion occurred on Thurs., June 9 at approximately 6:27 a.m. The fire took several emergency crews multiple hours to exterminate. An elderly woman was lighting a candle at the time of the explosion.  Responders transferred her to an Austin hospital for burns.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek said this is an ongoing investigation. However, he believes a gas leak caused the explosion. He asked the community to pray for the injured woman.

The Fayette County Record posted another video explaining the “total loss” of the church. They said “the explosion was so powerful, it blew off parts of the church’s roof…”

The full post reads, “Four hours after the explosion at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn, numerous firefighters are still on scene dousing hot spots. The force of the suspected gas explosion was so powerful it blew parts of the church’s roof into an adjacent tree. The church is a total loss.”

The full post reads, “At Hostyn at noon, walls of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church that are still barely standing after this morning’s suspected gas explosion are being knocked down in the hopes that some of the religious items still inside might be safely retrieved…all of the church’s historic exterior shrines, grotto, and Stations of the Cross appear undamaged by the blast.”

Request for Prayers

The Diocese of Victoria, Texas requested prayers for the parish pastor and community in a Facebook post.

The full post reads, “Please keep Father Felix Twumasi and the parishioners of Holy Rosary Church in Hostyn in your prayers. We will post updates as information is available.”

The parish then responded to the diocesan request:

The response reads, “We thank you greatly for the prayers. Please keep them coming. This is a very difficult time for our parish.”
