The Secret to a Spiritual Breakthrough? How St. Joseph’s Silence Can Make You a Spiritual Warrior

What if the secret to your greatest spiritual breakthrough… was silence?
In this episode of The Catholic Gentleman, Devin Schadt and John Heinen take us deep into the heart of Saint Joseph. He was a real person who wrestled with fear, struggled with uncertainty, and longed for greatness.
But he knew exactly where to go: to God. And he knew how to get there: through silence.
Here are three ways you can, too!
1) Silence unlocks your true greatness.
Saint Joseph didn’t blast his opinions on social media or seek comfort in worldly distractions. He turned to God.
“Joseph recognizes his weakness. And in that weakness, he recognizes his need for dependence on God. He humbles himself before God in the silence,” Schadt explains.
When Joseph was faced with Mary’s pregnancy, he didn’t lash out or retreat into himself. Instead, he entered a deep silence, and it was there that God spoke to him.
In today’s noisy world, choosing to enter silence as he did is a bold act of faith!
2) Silence makes you a champion of love.
Saint Joseph is known as the “most chaste spouse” for a reason. He teaches us that authentic love doesn’t seek to possess. It sacrifices in silence with reverence, dignity, and spiritual strength.
Heinen says this is “something we have to constantly be aware of, constantly on guard and constantly be turning to God—that He might make us like Joseph, a most chaste heart.”
3) Silence teaches humble obedience.
Saint Joseph’s life doesn’t include a single recorded word in Scripture. He embraced hiddenness. However, his actions spoke volumes!
“He waits on God for the commands so that he can act and obey them,” Schadt says.
He explains that true obedience means we don’t rush ahead with our own plans but wait with trust while living for an audience of One.
“We are not to do it to be noticed by men. We do it to be known by God.”
