The Vatican released images of Pope Emeritus Benedict IXV’s body following his death on Dec. 31.

The Holy See captured and released the images on Jan. 1.

His mortal remains now lie in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery chapel, the residence of the former pope as of his 2013 resignation.

His remains will lie in state for public viewing in St. Peter’s Basilica from Jan. 2-4. The funeral will then take place at 9:30 a.m. CET in St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican will then bury his body in the Vatican crypt below St. Peter’s Basilica.

In the photos below, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI wears a gold mitre, white and red vestments, and holds a rosary in his hands.
