Pope Francis Makes "Heartfelt Appeal" for Day of Prayer for Peace in Ukraine

Pope Francis asked the faithful to dedicate a day of prayer for peace in Ukraine on Wed., Jan. 26, as tensions rise between Russia and the eastern European country.

The pope expressed “concern” for the Ukrainian people and the possibility of “wider repercussions” across Europe and the world if a Russian invasion occurs.

“I am following with concern the increase of tensions that threaten to inflict a new blow to the peace in Ukraine and call into question the security of the European continent, with wider repercussions,” the Pope said in his Jan. 23 address after the Angelus prayer.

“I make a heartfelt appeal to all people of goodwill, that they may raise prayers to God Almighty, that every political action and initiative may serve human brotherhood, rather than partisan interests.”

“Given the current tensions, I propose that next Wed., Jan. 26, be a day of prayer for peace,” Pope Francis declared.

who are yourself our peace and reconciliation,
who so often said, “Peace to you,” grant us peace.

Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice, and brotherly love.
