You probably didn’t expect this!
When you think of religiosity, you might not think of pop singer Alanis Morissette.
But in a recent interview with The Guardian, she was asked what her “most treasured possession” was. Her answer: a crucifix.
Here’s her full answer: “A crucifix my grandmother carried escaping the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. She gave it to me when she died.”
Morisette was raised Catholic and credits her career to the Church, but she hasn’t remained a full practicing Catholic.
“I owe the Catholic Church my singing career,” she told The Star in an interview. “Honestly. I used to sing around the house and my brothers always told me I couldn’t sing to save my life.
“Then one day I was singing in church and a woman turned to me and said I had a beautiful voice. That changed everything for me. I loved the music. I loved the esthetic. I loved Jesus. I loved Mary. I wanted to be Mary.”
When asked by the interviewer if she meant the Blessed Virgin Mary or Mary Magdalene (referring to the common misconception that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute before following Jesus), Morisette replied, “Oh yes, I had my fill of good Catholic girlness. A lot of perfectionism, a lot of overachieving. I had my moments of snapping. There’s only so many years in a row you can keep that going. The frigidity, the guilt about enjoying yourself, about appreciating your body, about taking care of your body.”
So she doesn’t appear to be embracing the faith today. But you never know how God might work.
Say a prayer for Alanis Morisette!
