Pop-Punk Artist Avril Lavigne's Prayerful New Single Tops Christian Billboard Charts
This is quite the surprise!
Avril Lavigne, a pop-punk singer-songwriter, released her new single on Sept. 19 entitled, “Head Above Water.”
The single recently hit number one in digital sales on the Christian Billboard, and number two on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs and Christian Streaming Songs.
The artist is known for her punk-rock style and on-the-surface songwriting, some of which can be quite profane.
However, “Head Above Water” is a pure, powerful, and heartfelt ballad that symbolically cries out to God for mercy and healing through deep struggle and suffering.
Lavigne has never been considered a Christian artist, which is why topping the Christian charts shock!
Here are some of the lyrics:
“God, keep my head above water
Don’t let me drown, it gets harder
I’ll meet you there at the altar
As I fall down to my knees
Don’t let me drown, drown, drown
Don’t let me, don’t let me, don’t let me drown”
Where it originated: “I thought I was dying”
The entire song is a prayer based on an experience with Lyme Disease.
In a letter to her fans, she wrote these words:
“One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die.
“My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’
“In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”
It sounds like the Holy Spirit inspired her!
