Lol, this is funny!
In case you’ve been living under a rock, France just beat Croatia 4-2 to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia. In the flurry of articles that went out about the victory, a major one had significant typo that’s been copied all over the Internet.
The Associated Press article about it includes a photo of the French players throwing their coach up into the air following their win, and here’s what the caption says: “France head coach Didier Deschamps is thrown into the air by his players as they celibate after defeating Croatia in the World Cup final.”
Did you catch the typo? Instead of saying that the players “celebrate,” it says they “celibate.”
Here’s a picture of the typo in print:
You can also find the typo in photo captions around the Internet, for example here and here.
Of course, there’s a big difference between “celebrate” and “celibate”! While you’d expect a team to “celebrate” after becoming world champions in their sport, “celibacy” is a spiritual practice of voluntarily renouncing marriage and sexual relations so as to better serve the Kingdom of God.
Patrick Deneen, professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame, posted about the typo on his Facebook page with the comment, “Didn’t know it was a verb. But very admirable self control.” Another commenter wrote, “They really chaste their dream.”
