New Video Shows "Demonic" ISIS Militants Destroying Catholic Church in Philippines
A new video has emerged showing ISIS militants destroying and desecrating a Catholic cathedral church in the Philippines.
“That is blasphemy! That’s unacceptable,“ the local Bishop Edwin de la Peña of Marawi told CBCP News. “It’s obvious that their actions are really out of this world. It’s demonic.”
“We are angered by what happened. Our faith has really been trampled on.”
The video shows members of the ISIS-affiliated terrorist group Maute smashing sacred images, ripping pictures of Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, and ultimately setting fire to the church, all while yelling “Allahu Akbar.”
The video was released by the Islamic State news agency Amaq.
The bishop said he had received word that the group was planning on attacking the church before it happened. “But we didn’t take it seriously,” he said, “because for us it was unthinkable that it’s going to happen in Marawi.”
The militants also abducted a priest and staff members of the cathedral. The priest has since appeared in another video released by the militants asking for help.
