New Film Says Norma McCorvey Pretended to be Pro-Life for Money, Fr. Pavone Contradicts Claim
A Hulu documentary about “Jane Roe” Norma McCorvey of Roe vs. Wade claims she pretended to be pro-life for money.
Multiple reports surfaced that the new documentary AKA Jane Roe claims McCorvey was never actually pro-life. The film features McCorvey claiming her pro-life advocacy “was all an act.”
The report adds that pro-life causes, including Operation Rescue, paid her to pretend.
McCorvey’s Conversion
McCorvey reportedly changed her position on abortion after befriending Operation Rescue pro-life activist Flip Benham. She met him while working at an abortion clinic next-door to the Operation Rescue’s headquarters.
Benham invited her inside, and McCorvey said she changed her mind after seeing the fetal development of a baby.
“All those years I was wrong,” she said. “Signing that affidavit, I was wrong. Working in an abortion clinic, I was wrong. No more of this first trimester, second trimester, third trimester stuff. Abortion — at any point — was wrong. It was so clear. Painfully clear.”
She then converted to Christianity in 1995.
Through her work in the pro-life movement, McCorvey met Fr. Frank Pavone, who became her spiritual director and aided in her 1998 conversion to Catholicism
“I listened to him [Fr. Pavone] and came to realize that what God was actually saying to me was to ‘come ALL the way home to Him’ in His Church— the Church Jesus Christ Himself founded, the Mother church.”
However, reports surfaced today that Norma McCorvey allegedly lied.
The LA Times quotes McCorvey from the film. She allegedly says this is her “deathbed confession.”
“I was the big fish. I think it was a mutual thing. I took their money and they’d put me out in front of the cameras and tell me what to say. That’s what I’d say,” the report says. “It was all an act. I did it well too. I am a good actress.”
The article adds that McCorvey says, “If a young woman wants to have an abortion, that’s no skin off my a**. That’s why they call it choice.”
Fr. Frank Pavone Contradicts Claims
Fr. Frank Pavone of the Priests for Life contradicted the recent claims on Twitter..
Here’s his first tweet below:
Fr. Pavone’s full tweet reads, “So abortion supporters are claiming Norma McCorvey, the Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade, wasn’t sincere in her conversion. / She was. / I was her spiritual guide for 22 years, received her into the Catholic Church, kept regular contact, spoke with her the day she died, and conducted her funeral.”
Fr. Pavone added a second tweet:
Fr. Pavone later added, “So when Norma McCorvey, whom I knew closely for 22 years, was in the pro-abortion movement, she told their leaders she thought abortion was wrong! And when working in abortion clinics, she talked women out of abortion. She was against abortion well before joining the pro-life movement!”
Other pro-life advocates also commented on the claims, including Abby Johnson and Lila Rose.
Pro-life advocate and Live Action founder Lila Rose tweeted, “What @vicestudios and @iamnicksweeney are doing to drag ‘Jane Roe’ Norma McCorvey’s name, after her death, is disgusting. She spent her last 20+ yrs fighting abortion. / She defied the abortion lobby and their control. Now abortion activists twist her words when she can’t fight back.”
Former Planned Parenthood clinic director-turned pro-life advocate Abby Johnson tweeted, “I spoke with Norma McCorvey before her death. She was a woman who was used by both sides of the abortion debate…a mind tormented by her past and a body ravaged because of her tormented mind. She suffered greatly because of the deadly law that bore her name.”
Johnson added, “Norma McCorvey was loved so well and so completely by @frfrankpavone. He knew the sincerity of her pro-life conviction probably better than anyone else. Don’t believe the narrative that Hollywood is trying to spin.”
Johnson also tweeted, “Norma was very pro-life.”
Fr. Pavone posted a video of McCorvey discussing her pro-life advocacy and Catholic conversion.
