NASCAR Champion Boldly Thanks "Blessed Mother & Sacred Heart of Jesus"
What a great public show of his faith!
Johnny Sauter won the 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship. In a TV interview immediately afterwards, he thanked the types of people you’d normally expect: his pit crew, family, and various people who helped him.
But at the end he added in something you don’t hear very often: “I thank the Blessed Mother and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.”
Sauter has been open about his Catholic faith for a while now. In an article about him from earlier in his career in 2004, it said his favorite quote was “God brought you to it, God will bring you through it. No matter what you’re doing and how bad things seem, it seems that there’s always a way around it or always a way through it.”
He was also quoted as saying he thinks “the whole NASCAR family is religious” and that he thinks about God “on a daily basis.”
Here’s a video of his post-victory interview (he thanks Jesus and Mary at 3:40):
