Comedian Jim Gaffigan, who has publicly identified himself as a Catholic, tweeted support for gay pride this weekend, in defiance to Catholic Church teaching that homosexual acts are immoral.
Here’s his tweet:
The tweet reads: “I’m so proud of my gay kids. Happy #pride2017 #pridenyc”.
His wife Jeannie also posted apparent support for gay pride on Instagram.
Here’s her Instagram post:
The text with the photo reads: “‘Mom? Is everyone in New York City gay?’ #MichaelGaffigan”.
The Catholic Church teaches that people who homosexual tendencies “must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity,” but that homosexual acts constitute “grave depravity,” are “intrinsically disordered,” and that “under no circumstances can they be approved.” Instead, “homosexual persons are called to chastity.” (CCC 2357-2359)
Catholic author Leila Miller strongly criticized the Gaffigan’s for their support for gay pride while also publicly claiming to be Catholic.
“I’m not going to remain silent with things like this,” she wrote on Facebook. “This is scandalous and evil. We are talking about mortal sin. Mortal. Sin. Meaning, deadly sin that separates people from God for all eternity. I don’t think that’s fun, light, or celebratory. It’s no place for children, especially Catholic children. 😢 How did we get here? The desire to be “loved” by a world that hated Christ.”
Gaffigan and his wife delivered the commencement speech at Catholic University of America last year. In it, the Gaffigan’s talked about their Catholic faith.
Referencing the Catholic church where he and Jeannie were married, Jim explained that it’s “the same church my five children were baptized in and the church where once a week I’m reminded to keep focused on priorities. God, family then work.”
