This is wonderful!
Comic Jim Gaffigan and his wife Jeannie have been public about their Catholic, with Jim often talking about it in his standup routine, and their faith featuring in their autobiographical TV show The Jim Gaffigan Show.
Earlier this week, their oldest daughter Marre received the sacrament of Confirmation!
Here’s Jim’s Instagram post:
The text reads: “Happy Confirmation oldest offspring @marregaffigan . Next stop, the nunnery. Thank you to sponsor and great human @emilychennyc.”
The part about “the nunnery” is likely a joke (remember he’s a comedian). =)
Actress Patricia Heaton, who has also been public about her Catholic faith, tweeted congratulations to the Gaffigans.
Her tweet reads: “Congrats to Marre! What’s her confirmation name? I wanted to go with #StSebastian who was so tough it took two attempts to kill him, but ended up with also- martyred #StCecelia, patron of musicians. Catholic Tweatons- what’s your confirmation name?”
The sacrament of Confirmation strengthens a baptized Christian in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, preparing them to better witness to the faith.
Jim Gaffigan was featured in a documentary about the image of Divine Mercy, and Jim and Jeannie together delivered the commencement speech at Catholic University of America in 2016.
However, in June 2017 Jim tweeted support for gay pride. The Catholic Church teaches that people who homosexual tendencies “must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity,” but that homosexual acts constitute “grave depravity,” are “intrinsically disordered,” and that “under no circumstances can they be approved.” Instead, “homosexual persons are called to chastity.” (CCC 2357-2359)
