Could there be a biblical basis for cryptocurrency?
In an interview with ChurchPOP editor Jacqueline Burkepile, Christian married couple Brian and Kelly Estes, co-executive lead producers of the new film, "God Bless Bitcoin," unveil the biblical reasoning behind cryptocurrency, especially amid high levels of inflation.
According to the film's description,
"God Bless Bitcoin" takes a deep dive into the moral and ethical aspects of Bitcoin and the impact that this money can have on the world."
The creators break the film into sections:
"First, we wanted to explain how the world’s financial system works, to show how it wages inflation and discriminates against the middle class and those who live in poverty."
"Second, we wanted to show how Bitcoin is a more ethical form of money that is open to everyone no matter their socioeconomic status, their race, their gender."
The Biblical Basis for Cryptocurrency
Kelly Estes told Burkepile she penned the title, "God Bless Bitcoin," as a prayer.
"It is just a little prayer," Kelly says. "I want people to think of it as if you were to say, 'God, if Bitcoin really is a more moral and ethical form of money, could you bless it so that all of your people would be able to use it and live in abundance the way that you want for us?'"
The couple also explains why they believe there is Biblical backing for cryptocurrency and why it should matter to Christians.
"If we look at what Bitcoin really is, it's software that allows us to send value through the internet like we do with email today," Brian explains. "It allows us to send value through the Internet without having the permission of a bank...So it's really freedom technology. And for Christians– God wanted us to be free, and so this is a technology that enables that."
Kelly says it goes back to the seventh commandment: "Thou Shalt Not Steal." She explains that "every time a government prints money," the currency is devalued.
"Essentially, it is stealing your time, your God-given talents from you, your energy, so that the government can have more money," Kelly says.
The couple also explains that cryptocurrency can help prevent the government or banks from cutting off an individual's money supply for any reason. They also believe it could potentially limit war.
"What the governments do today is they keep printing more and more money, so the wars never end. And so Bitcoin, because there's a limited supply, and the governments can't print it– if they can't print it, and if we were on a Bitcoin standard around the world, then it would limit the number of wars we have," Brian explains.
"In the Bible, it says, 'Thou shalt not kill.' Bitcoin actually enables that truth that we shouldn't kill. So if the world's on a Bitcoin standard, it will limit the government's ability to conduct these unjust wars, so we'll have more peace and harmony around the world."
