Get pumped! World Youth Day happens THIS week and here’s the meaning behind its logo!
Designed by 20-year-old college student Ambar Calvo of Panamá University, Calvo won the World Youth Day design contest instigated by Pope Francis.
Mary plays a central role in this year’s logo, which is fitting, because the theme is “May it be done to me according to your Word.” (Mary’s words to the Angel Gabriel in Luke 1:38.)
The Archdiocese of Panama released the meaning behind the logo in an infographic, which includes the Panama Canal, a silhouette of Panama, World Youth Day’s pilgrim cross, and a silhouette of the Blessed Mother.
It also includes five dots, representing Mary’s crown and the five continents attending World Youth Day.
Additionally, according to World Youth Day’s website, “The logo’s silhouette has the shape of a heart and the letter ‘M’ to represent Mary as ‘Bridge of the World, Heart of the Universe,’ reminding us that the Blessed Mother is a bridge that leads us to Christ.”
Red, white and blue also represent the colors depicted on the Panamanian flag.
