Mark Zuckerberg, the 32 year old founder and CEO of Facebook, revealed on Christmas on his Facebook page that he is no longer an atheist and now thinks religion is “very important.”
Zuckerberg shared his new ideas about religion in a comment thread on a post he made about Christmas. “Merry Christmas,” he posted on his page, “and Happy Hanukkah from Priscilla, Max, Beast and me!”
Since Zuckerberg had previously publicly identified himself as an atheist, a commenter asked, “But Aren’t You Atheist? [sic]” Zuckerberg replied: “No. I was raised Jewish and then I went through a period where I questioned things, but now I believe religion is very important.”
He did not explain further what his religious beliefs are now.
Zuckerberg was married to Priscilla Chan in 2012, and they had their first child in December 2015. Soon after that, they announced that they planned to donate 99% of their Facebook stock to charity. It’s not clear if getting married and becoming a father affected his outlook on life, though those things often lead people to take religion more seriously.
Zuckerberg and his wife also met Pope Francis earlier this year at the Vatican. “It was a meeting we’ll never forget,” Zuckerberg said. “You can feel [Pope Francis’] warmth and kindness, and how deeply he cares about helping people.”
