Confessing the same sins over and over?

In this episode of The Catholic Talk Show, Ryan Scheel and Ryan Dellacrosse discuss overcoming habitual sin with Father Josh Johnson of Ascension Presents. He explains how we sometimes focus too much on the symptoms of sin rather than its cause, leading to cycles of confession and relapse.

What’s Really Causing Your Sin?

Oftentimes, our sins stem from "root viceshidden beneath the surface. Father Johnson explains he once confessed the sin of detraction, only to realize later in prayer that it was rooted in sloth.

“Sloth isn’t just laziness. It can also be over-busyness that keeps us from prioritizing God,” he says.

Recognizing these deeper issues, rather than just confessing our isolated sins, can help us grow in virtue and break free from spiritual stagnation.

The Power of Prayer and Fasting

In prayer, we listen to God's voice and allow His Grace to work in our hearts. Father Johnson reminds us that Jesus told Peter, “If you do not stay awake and pray, you will fall into temptation.”

Fasting, not just during the upcoming Lenten season but as a regular discipline, can also help with our prayer.

“If we can deny ourselves small pleasures, like sugar in our coffee or the snooze button, we can begin to embrace the ascetical spiritual life,” he says.

A Practical Battle Plan

If you're struggling with the same sins, “don’t just rely on confession, also use practical tools,” Father Johnson recommends. Start by avoiding near occasions of sin, seeking accountability, joining support groups, and working on a structured prayer life.

Ultimately, he says, “Holiness is not about never falling, but about always getting back up.”

The guys say that recognizing underlying vices of habitual sins—such as pride, sloth, or envy—will help you confess better and bring lasting spiritual freedom!
