Catholic Owner Opens Furniture Stores to Hurricane Harvey Homeless in Houston
Jim McIngvale, owner of Gallery Furniture stores in Houston and nicknamed “Mattress Matt,” is being lauded as a local hero in Houston for opening his furniture stores to those made homeless by hurricane Harvey – and he cites his Catholic faith as his inspiration.
“I was raised as a Catholic,” he told the local KENS5 news in Houston. “I continued my Catholic faith throughout my life, trying to do the right thing and hopefully, you do the right thing and help people along the way.”
According to an August 28th report, two of his stores were already housing 400 people, providing them with free beds and food.
“We had several Penske rental trucks, 24-foot trucks that you can get in any flooded street. We sent volunteers out in Houston picking up people.”
McIngvale has been long known for his philanthropy in his community: for the last 20 years, he’s donated rooms full of furniture to families in need around Christmastime.
