Britney Spears responded to St. Monica Catholic Church’s claim that she never contacted them about her wedding to Sam Asghari.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, the pop singer stated on Aug. 3 that she originally hoped to marry in the Santa Monica, Calif. Catholic church, but COVID protocols would not allow it. She also said they denied her request because she is not Catholic.

Spears added that the church requires a “test” before a marriage. She appeared to misunderstand Catholic marriage requirements.

Spears later responded to St. Monica Church’s claim that she never contacted them, saying she “doesn’t like being called a liar.”

Here’s the text of Spears’ post:

“There was a lot of backlash saying I never asked to get married at the church I pictured…I’m writing this because the church said I never asked,” Spears begins.

“I hired a wedding planner who has done Madonna’s wedding and plenty more. He was extremely expensive, and yes, my first request was to get married in that church pictured [St. Monica Catholic Church].

“It was the only picture I had and sent it to him through my phone at my house. I was told [six] weeks later [that] I could not get married there!

“During the [two] years of Covid, I also wanted to go there. I was told ‘no’ due to the pandemic. It’s not a big deal, but I don’t like being called a liar when their church says I never asked!

“Pssss…the church [pictured here] is St. Peter’s Basilica in Italy…not the Santa Monica Church,” the post concludes.

Requirements for a Catholic Church Wedding

ChurchPOP reported in August 2021 that the pop singer said she is Catholic and attends Mass. However, no evidence suggests she attended the required Catholic formation.

Marriage is a sacrament, therefore, at least one of the individuals marrying must be Catholic. Additionally, her two previous marriages must be annulled before the Church can recognize her marriage to Asghari. They also must promise to raise their children Catholic.

Spears was raised Baptist, however, several of her family members are practicing Catholics, including her mother, Lynne Spears, and her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears.

Fr. Matthew Schneider of the Legionaries of Christ explains in this Twitter post what the church requires for a Catholic marriage.

Here’s his post below:

Here’s the text of his post:

“4 main requirements for a wedding to take place in a Catholic church:

1. The man and/or woman is Catholic
2. Neither has impediments (married to another, etc.)
3. Both intend what the Church does (permanent, exclusive, open to kids, etc.)
4. They plan to raise kids Catholic”.

Fr. Schneider further clarified the requirements in a second post:

@FrMatthewLC, Twitter

“The Catholic Church is open to all, but for many, to have a wedding in a Catholic church requires becoming Catholic and agreeing to Catholic teaching,” Fr. Schneider wrote.

“Many other religions would be similar. For example, I doubt a synagogue would hold a wedding if neither spouse was Jewish.”

Spears eventually married Asghari on June 9, 2022 at her California mansion.
