RIP: Roman Exorcist Fr. Gabriele Amorth Dies at Age 91

Stephen Driscoll, CNA

Fr. Gabriele Amorth, exorcist for the Diocese of Rome, has died, according Cindy Wooden, Rome Bureau Chief of Catholic News Service. He was 91 years old.

Fr. Amorth is reputed to have personally performed thousands of exorcisms during his career. As of 2013, he claimed to have performed around 160,000, explaining that he often performs many exorcisms for the same person.

Born in 1925 in a small town in Italy, Amorth was ordained a priest in 1954. He was made an official exorcist for the Diocese of Rome in 1986. And in 1990, he helped to found the International Association of Exorcists, which has several hundred members.

He has been very open about his work and its implications for the Church and world. He has said publicly that demons particularly like to attack politicians, that invoking St. John Paul II is particularly effective against demons, that ISIS is demonic, that a demon named in the Old Testament specializes in attacking the family, and that modern saints like St. Padre Pio battled demons in their lifetimes.

May he rest in peace!
