Bodies of Ulma Family Exhumed: Beatification for Poles Who Helped Jews Escape Nazis Set for Sept. 2023
The remains of the Ulma family have been exhumed! They will be beatified on Sept 10, 2023. This is first time the Church will beatify an entire family, including an unborn child.
Sept. 10 will undoubtedly be a historic beatification.
For the first time, an entire family will be beatified: Józef and Wiktoria Ulma, their six children between the ages of one and eight, and (also for the first time) their unborn child.
The Archdiocese of Przemyśl, which initiated the cause for beatification and ordered the exhumation of the bodies, said in a statement: “The results of a detailed and thorough forensic examination clearly confirm and correspond to the archival data and those collected during the canonical diocesan investigation regarding the martyrdom of the Ulma Family, suffered on March 24, 1944.”
The remains of the Ulma family are exhumed: Beatification set for Sept. 10, 2023
“The earthly remains were transported to a specially prepared and suitable place chosen by Archbishop Adam Szala. There they will wait for the moment when they will be transferred to the parish church of Markowa”.
Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints Cardinal Marcello Semeraro will preside over the Sept. 10 beatification Mass.
Nazis martyred the Ulma family on March 24, 1944 for hiding eight Jews in the village of Markowa, Poland. However, someone revealed their secret and betrayed Jozef and Wiktoria. Thus, the Nazis captured and killed the Jews, and later, also slaughtered the entire Ulma family.
Of the 120 surviving Markowa Jews, 21 owe their lives to the Markowa families. In 1995, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center honored the Ulmas as “Righteous Among the Nations” for the sacrifice of their lives.
Prayer for the Intercession of the Ulma Family
Almighty and eternal God,
we thank You for the testimony of the heroic love
of the spouses Józef and Wiktoria with their children,
who gave their lives to save persecuted Jews.
May their prayers and example
support families in Christian life
and help everyone to follow the true path of holiness.
Lord, if it is in accordance with Your will,
kindly grant me the grace … for which I am asking You
through their intercession
and count them among the Blessed.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Our Father…, Hail Mary…, Glory Be…
