If you still haven’t heard, the new smartphone game PokémonGO is kind of taking over the world.
Maybe not the whole world, but parks, churches, and businesses all over the world. It’s an augmented-reality game in which you have to travel to real-world places in order to catch virtual-world pokémon on your phone. It’s now the biggest mobile game in U.S. history.
Bishop David Ricken of Green Bay took the game’s popularity as an opportunity to talk about Jesus on Twitter:
He tweeted on July 11th: “You might never find a Pikachu, but I promise you this – Search for Jesus, and you’ll find Him every time. Let #PokemonGO. Go #FindGOD.”
As of this writing, his tweet has been retweeted 358 times and liked 368 times.
The next day on July 12th, he sent out another tweet related to the game:
It said: “#PokemonGO is drawing people to churches. Great! What an excellent opportunity to share the love and mercy of Jesus int his Year of Mercy!”
Bishop Ricken was referring to the fact that many important locations in the game happen to be churches, which has led many un-churched people to visit churches for the game. (Read more: New Smartphone Game PokémonGO Is Leading People to Church!)
Other Catholics have talked about how the game could be helpful for evangelization:
