What a great birthday present!
Covington Catholic High School Student Nicholas Sandmann announced a lawsuit victory today. Today is also is 18th birthday.
The Sandmann family filed a defamation lawsuit against the Washington Post after a video surfaced showing Sandmann at the Jan. 2019 March for Life standing before drumming Native American Nathan Phillips. The media outlet painted Sandmann as an aggressor and racist.
Sandmann’s attorney Lin Wood said the family sued due to the “emotional distress Nicholas and his family suffered.”
The family said they were forced to move out of their home temporarily after the reports surfaced. The school also forbade Sandmann from coming to school immediately following the incident.
Here’s Sandmann’s victory announcement below:
Sandmann’s announcement reads, “On Feb. 19, 2019, I filed $250 million defamation lawsuit against [the] Washington Post. Today, I turned 18 [and Washington Post] settled my lawsuit.
“Thanks to [Todd McMurtry and Lin Wood] for their advocacy. Thanks to my family & millions of you who have stood your ground by supporting me. I still have more to do.”
Sandmann followed up with an additional tweet, seemingly warning Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey.
Sandmann’s full tweet reads, “We have settled with WAPO and CNN. / The fight isn’t over. 2 down. 6 to go. Don’t hold your breath, [Jack Dorsey].”
Sandmann also retweeted lawyer Lin Wood’s congratulatory announcement.
Wood’s tweet reads, “For our present to [Nick Sandmann] to celebrate his 18th Birthday, [Todd McMurtry] and I gave Nicholas the gift of justice from . . . / THE WASHINGTON POST / #FightBack”.

The Washington Post commented on the lawsuit.

The Sandmann family filed additional lawsuits against at least 13 other outlets, including ABC, CBS, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, NPR, Slate, The Hill, and Gannett Additional. The family also sued NBC.
Several social media users commented on the victory.
Here’s what some people said:
This user said, “Happy birthday, Nicholas! Continue to fight the good fight in all your future years on earth.”
Another user tweeted, “Happy Birthday and congratulations! Keep fighting. / Job well done to your parents. They’ve raised a man with integrity, confidence, and courage.”
Catholic Deacon Keith Fournier tweeted, “Thank you Nicholas! You are David with five smooth stones and heroic faith. You took on a Goliath, and with a lot of prayer, and great lawyers, you took down the Washington Post, exposing defamation masquerading as reporting. You give us hope!”
