As you may know, the nation of Venezuela has fallen into a state of terrible poverty and violence. Even though it has the largest proven oil reserves in the world, the socialist programs of Hugo Chávez and his successors have led the country into ruin.
So now the bishops of Venezuela are calling on Twitter for the Virgin Mary to save Venezuela “from the claws of communism and socialism.”
Here’s their tweet:
Translated to English, the text reads: “Most Holy Virgin, Mother of Coromoto, heavenly patron of Venezuela, free our homeland from the claws of communism and socialism.”
“CEV” stands for the Conferencia Episcopal Venezolana, or the Conference of Venezuelan Bishops.
The Catholic Church has long upheld the importance of private property and subsidiarity and condemned communism. In 1936, Pope Pius XI taught: “Communism is intrinsically wrong, and no one who would save Christian civilization may collaborate with it in any undertaking whatsoever. Those who permit themselves to be deceived into lending their aid towards the triumph of Communism in their own country, will be the first to fall victims of their error.”
