The 2016 Major League Baseball World Series is underway, and it’s the Chicago Cubs versus the Cleveland Indians. To join in the fun, the bishops of the two teams’ cities recently announced a bet on the outcome of the series: whoever loses will provide food for 100 homeless people in the other city.
“Both cities have waited an eternity for this moment,” Archbishop Cupich of Chicago was quoted as saying in a press release about the bet. “So while it will be a historic win for either side, we feel it’s only right to celebrate by giving back.”
“We are confident in our team and yet,” he added, with a friendly jab: “I have to admit that I feel a bit guilty since in our tradition it is a sin to bet on a sure thing!”
Bishop Lennon of Cleveland had this response: “Archbishop Cupich isn’t the only one praying for a win. If by some devilish mistake the Indians were to lose, we will hold up our end of the bargain…”
The seminaries in Chicago and Cleveland have followed their bishops’ lead and also made a bet on the series.
“Father Mark Latcovich, President-Rector of Saint Mary and Borromeo Seminaries in Cleveland, and Father John Kartje, President-Rector of University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in Chicago,” another press release reads, “have promised to make a charitable donation to a Catholic school of the winning seminary’s choice.”
