The Christian cross was reported as an anti-LGBT hate symbol by a student at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse last year.

The Christian cross, which appeared on a poster for the evangelical Protestant organization Cru (formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ), represents “oppression and hate of the LGBT+ community,” the student told the school’s bias response team. The student also said they did not feel safe as long as there were “homophobic” groups on campus.

It’s not clear whether the school took any official actions against the Christian group or poster as a result.

The report was one of 192 reports of bias or hate on the university’s campus in the 2015-2016 school year.

Cru is an evangelical Protestant organization founded in 1951 to minister to college students, though since then it has expanded to other demographics. It was known as Campus Crusade for Christ until 2011, when it changed its name to avoid negative connotations related to the word “crusade,” especially in Muslim communities.

Is this just a fluke or do you think this is a sign of the times? Let us know in the comments!
